Nineteenth century Australia saw the development of world-class artists and art that is now receiving the international attention it deserves. The Chauncy sisters, Martha Berkeley and Theresa Walker, were the first artists to emigrate to South Australia. Martha executed miniature portrait paintings as well as landscapes and flower studies. Theresa created miniature medallions in wax and became Australia's first female sculptor, the only significant female sculptor of the period. The sisters were the first female artists of the country to make direct depictions of Aboriginals as part of their subject matter. (Art Gallery of South Australia)
