This book attempts to overcome racial, ethnic, religious, and gender points of view from which, until now, we observed the world and our own selves. It is based on the idea that every individual has multiple identities that allow him/her to see with multiple eyes and to feel with multiple bodies, freeing everyone from predetermined roles and models. It is a never-ending process. Dr. Camaiti Hostert turns the meaning of this social practice upside down, and from an original concept related to a specific community. (African Americans who were light skinned enough passed for white in order to escape the violence of racism and discrimination.)This makes it a universal tool to redefine any identity, redefining also the term ""culture"" and those social practices that oppose all binarisms and all social and linguistic barriers. The term ""passing,"" taken from Nella Larsen's novel, shows the pain of racism, but also the fact that in that practice there there is an unknown territory that forces the individuals who enter into it to redefine themselves.
