This text explores the founding years of the "jazzing" tradition in South Africa's black communities, which influenced current styles of music, musical performance and dance. This book tells of such musicians as Peter Rezant, "Zuluboy" Zele, The Jazz Revellers, The Merry Blackbirds and the Pitch Black Follies, who entertained the country's urban black population during the early decades of this century. It is accompanied by an audio cassette of 25 tracks recorded between 1930 and 1945. The tape has been mechanically enhanced to provide modern listening quality.
