I admit to being a huge fan of the "Grimm" TV series, but I had some trepidation about whether Portland Detective and mythological hunter Nick Burkhardt would translate well to the written page, taken out of the visual medium on which it relies so much for impact. With no clever CGI or special effects to fall back on, the book manages successfully to bring the paranormal world of Wesen and mythical royal families comes vividly to life. Nick, Hank, Monroe, Juliette and the others, together with a whole host of paranormal newcomers, hit the ground running with the discovery of a body in a shallow grave in the woods... and the pace doesn't slow down. As a "Grimm" fan I loved the book but I feel confident that even those readers who have never watched the TV series would find the book entertaining. There is enough basic explanation of the underlying story premise and the mythology to provide an enticing entree in the world behind the original Grimm brothers fairytales even for a newcomer to the eerie, troubled, haunted world of Nick Burkhardt. If you like tales of menace, otherworldly creatures, heroes and battle against the forces of the dark then this is the book for you!
