When McLennan was growing up in the 1950s, the big event of the year was the arrival of Jimmy Sharman's boxing tents. However, they were banned in 1969. After many years overseas, McLennan returned to find that a few boxing tents still existed. He worked in one of these tents and learned a lot about Australian men, himself included.
