This collection of essays analyzes certain of the forms in which literate women expressed their reactions to the 1789 Revolution--forms structured by their experiences, writings, and interpretation of events. Some of the questions addressed are: Were literate women passive onlookers or active participants in the revolutionary drama? What was their attitude towards domesticity and the emerging ideology of separate spheres for men and women? What methods, ploys, and channels were used by these women to counteract the dominant role of men in society? How as the Revolution inscribed in post-revolutionary nineteenth-century women's texts? Was there a gendered response by women to the events of 1789 and their aftermath? Among the women discussed in this collection are Charlotte Corday, Olympe de Gouges, Mme Roland, Mme de Stael, Isabelle de Charrier, and George Sand. This book amply illustrates how the seeds of feminine discontent and rebellion of the early nineteenth century were sown during the turbulent years of the revolutionary period.
