This current volume is a translation of a series of articles on the traditional system of Shi'i seminary education known as the hawza. After beginning with information about the hawza, the book begins by discussing the formative period of the hawza in the early Islamic period and then traces the development of the hawza in historic centres of Shi'i scholarship in Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. Finally, the impact of the Islamic Revolution on the hawza in Iran is examined.
