HIV infection has, more than any other event this century, taught us that the biological, psychological, social and behavioural aspects of disease are inextricably linked. This volume examines the interplay between these aspects of HIV disease, using the conceptual framework provided by the biopsychosocial model of disease.<P>The broad spectrum of HIV symptomatology has necessitated the gathering together of a diverse body of health professionals, who have sought to overcome the threat posed to both physical and emotional health by the infection. Thus the disease has done much to shift the focus of medical care away from an exclusive orientation towards physical well-being, to one which includes emotional well-being and quality of life.
