We all dream. Humanity has always been fascinated by these voyages into dreamspace night after night, and intrigued by the depth of hidden meanings within them. Chinese dream interpretation, dating as far back as the Han Dynasty more than two millennia ago, has been so important and foundational to Chinese culture that it became identified with one of its grandest and earliest historical figures, the Duke of Zhou.

The Duke of Zhou's Interpretation of Dreams is the most popular by far of all the dream books written in China and is said to have been authored by the Duke of Zhou -- the second most revered figure in Chinese history after Confucius, who stated himself that he looked up to the Duke of Zhou as his role model.

This book incorporates the two main versions of the text: the Complete Compendium of the Duke of Zhou's Interpretations of Dreams, the most extensive and comprehensive volume, and the Book of Newly Collected Interpretations of Dreams by the Duke of Zhou, a Tang Dynasty edition that was rediscovered among the manuscripts found at Dunhuang in the early 20th century.

Together they contain more than 1,000 entries on dream interpretation, which are grouped by theme into 28 chapters. And they have stood the test of time remarkably well. Immediately applicable to the life of the 21st century reader, these interpretations and predictions afford a wealth of insights into the language of dreams and the good or bad fortune that it foretells.

周禮有占夢之官,吉夢、噩夢,所占不一。惜其術今不傳矣。

--庸閒齋筆記*說夢

The Rites of the Zhou Dynasty mention officials who gave divinations from dreams. There were auspicious and nightmarish dreams, for what was to be divined was not all one and the same. Once such an art existed, but today it is no longer transmitted.
