Memories from Southern Africa Book 4: This picture book is the fourth of the series travelling in Southern Africa, of 7, which cover some touring - mostly guided - mostly of South Africa, but also a trip to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and a safari excursion in Botswana. It continues our stay in Cape Town and a whole day trip along the coast to the Cape of Good Hope, and visit to the famed Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. It starts in the Waterfront area of Cape Town (where we stayed) with more great view of Table Mountain. The side of Table Mountain around to the west of Cape Town was seen at the start of our day-long drive at one of the many suburbs which ring the tableland. A brief stop to stretch legs was at Hout Bay (22 km from Cape Town. This seaside town seemed to be a mecca for fishing with quite a few boats. A better view of the bay occurred when we drove away from it and stopped at a lookout to look back. The first part of the drive ran along a coast road giving great views of the Atlantic Ocean (our trip had started in the Indian Ocean). Our first real stop was at Boulder Beach where a large colony of African penguins allowed us to interrupt their morning. They were very tame and allowed quite close approaches. A long drive down the Cape Peninsula reached the carpark near the Cape of Good Hope. Although only 65 km south of Cape Town, the drive was through many little towns and quite circuitous. Despite its impressive name, the Cape of Good Hope isn’t very impressive. A further drive took us to the southern most point of the Cape Peninsula: Cape Point (still not the most southerly point of Southern Africa). This was more like it. Rugged, high, rocky and gave wonderful views, including of a beach named in honour of Dias. After a long day, it was getting a bit late for the visit to Kirstenbosch; light was going and photography became moot. Still some of the enormous number of plants in the garden did get taken. The next day we left the south of South Africa for the northeast and another safari. This book contains 81 still images and each has a minimal accompanying descriptive text. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken by the author, an amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of the coast and hinterland of south-east Africa, have a read, If you have wondered what such a trip might entail, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these ‘Memories from Southern Africa’.
